Kudokai Apparel

Our journey towards creating the identity for new sports clothing brand ‘Kudokai Apparel’ was filled with courage, creativity and imagination – just like the owners of the brand itself!

“The client had a very specific vision for the brand of his new sports clothing line: that it should feature a diamond shape, known throughout history to represent strength and invincibility”.

Strength, power and recovery became the keywords of the ‘Kudokai’ brand. The team therefore felt that it needed to be strong by name as well – so they drew inspiration from their own childhood passions.

“As a child, I loved watching the anime series ‘Sankukai’, where the ‘Kai’ means restoration, recovery, or ‘King of Kings’. Likewise, in Japanese ‘kudo’ means honour, glory and acclaim. So, what better name than to combine these two words to create ‘Kudokai’ – a name that evokes everything that sports is all about?” says Luis, the creative director for this project.

Diamond is one of nature’s strongest materials, so a diamond shape was added to the logo – with a twist. Look closely, and you’ll see an arrow as part of the diamond shape. “This gives the abstract symbol the motion and flow of a classic sports brand, while setting it apart from the rest. Plus, we used the colour blue as in Japan it symbolises recovery and has connotations of battling with pride, a sense of fair play, and a strong desire for victory.”
